home why soundthrust rates Q&A plan your event

Q: SoundThrust.com? What kind of name is that?
A: SoundThrust.com was the natural name for superior sound with the clear and full-range power to get your party moving!

Q: Why should we hire you, I have an iPod with all my songs already?
A: Few people have the proper equipment and expertise to provide a party experience like SoundThrust.com
Some people have successfully DJ'd their own party, but it's not so easy to do well. We'd love for you to hire us, of course, but if you are interesting in saving money by avoiding a DJ service, we will help with some FREE advice, click here for more info.

Q: Where are you located?
A: We are located in Western North Carolina, and do most events in Buncombe and Henderson counties. We serve regions that are within 100 miles of the Asheville regional airport (AVL).

During 2008 we will be re-locating to the Twin Cities (St. Paul-Minneapolis) area of Minnesota.

Q: Can I browse your music library?
A: Sure! Go to the 'Plan your event page', and see if we are available on the date of your event. If so, you can fill in our reservation form online, including your desired music selections which you pick from our music library. There is no obligation and the date will not be reserved for you until you submit a deposit. You can log in anytime and update or change your party planning.

Q: I'm not a music expert, can you help us choose songs?
A: Of course. Choose the songs you know and like, and we will fill in the gaps with other songs while trying to respect your style.
Most events only have enough time for 50-80 songs. Pick as many as you like, most people choose about a dozen must-play songs and a dozen try-to-play songs.

We normally select songs during the event depending upon what your audience is responding to. When choosing your songs, try to pick selections that both you and your audience will like that fit with the event.

Q: What if you don't have the special or unusual songs I want? Can I provide my own music?
A: Absolutely! We have a large library of music, and we will gladly add your special requests to our library so you can include it on your playlist. If you have special requests we will attempt to locate and purchase this music for your event for a small additional fee, or you may provide CDs which we will add to your playlist. Any music provided to us must be an original, legally obtained version, and we cannot return music once it has been added into our library. Please provide additional music at least a week prior to your event.

Q: Will you give us a CD of the songs played?
A: We cannot do this because distributing copies of songs from our music library would (in nearly all cases) violate licensing and be illegal.

Q: How do you handle requests?
A: However you want. You can choose to allow guest requests, allow requests with your approval before playing, or not allow requests at all. Our computerized database of digital music makes it easy for us to search and select requested songs.

Q: You use a powerful sound system? I don't want loud blaring music that will annoy my guests.
A: We play at the level that is appropriate for your event. In many cases the reason DJs sound loud is because they use systems that have distortion and cause fatigue. Our system has the power to provide a first-rate dance floor experience, yet it has a big, open & clear sound that is pleasing to listen to. We can project this clean and clear sound all the way to the back of your audience. We use equipment to measure our sound levels, and we strive to operate our system at a level that makes dancing fun, but is acceptable to you, and the facilities management.

Q: What kind of equipment is used? Bose?
A: No.

Lots of people know the Bose name, but it's not very popular with concert sound professionals. Bose is known for very small speaker systems that are surprisingly good sounding for the size. To do this, Bose applies electronic correction to get acceptable sound from small lightweight boxes. Many mobile DJs are attracted to lightweight equipment that is easy to carry.

But you can't fool physics with little plasticbox speakers. Great quality sound with danceclub power requires industrial grade equipment that is expensive, heavy, and requires a knowledge of audio engineering to achieve it's potential.

We take a no-compromises approach. We use the very best equipment available regardless of cost, using hardware that is capable of truly excellent sound from the deepest bass all the way across the spectrum. Our industrial tour-grade gear is rugged, powerful and likely sounds better than any audio system you have ever heard, anywhere. To achieve this level of excellence we carefully engineer and calibrate our systems to your specific room for maximum possible performance.

For example, we use a rack of Crown Macro-Tech amplifiers. These cost about $2500 each, we could have bought DJ amps for about $350 instead, but that's not our style. We use the kind of hardware touring companies choose when cost is no object, and failure during the show is absolutely positively unacceptable. It is very rare to see mobile DJs using this class of equipment, but SoundThrust.com knows your critical wedding (or event) will only happen once-in-a-lifetime, and we don't compromise.

Most DJs use one amplifier or powered plasticbox speakers, some advanced DJs use two amplifiers (an extra amp dedicated just for powerful bass). But Soundthust.com uses a carefully engineered system with three high powered amplifiers, and a fourth amp as hot-spare running idle just in case there is ever a failure with any of the other units.

This gives us great sound, great control, and enough energy to power your party.

We use an all-digital computer database driven sound system for the ultimate in playlist flexibility.

Most mobile DJs use a little tabletop system, a couple plastic speakers on sticks, and arrive in a passenger vehicle or pickup.

SoundThrust.com comes prepared with more experience, and more top-grade sound equipment, delivered early to your party in a diesel 8 ton commercial truck.

Comparing DJs? Ask them about their professional audio engineering experience with live concert sound, ask how many tons of gear their truck will carry, ask if they use SQL databases for music automation, ask how many kilowatts they have and how many audio sub-feeds. Ask how much they pay for amplifiers. You'll discover that SoundThrust.com offers much more, at rates that are easily affordable.

Q: How do you handle guests, photographers or parents wanting special requests or adjustments on the wedding day?
A: We strive to serve the people who contract us. When you tell us about your event, you can identify the people you authorize to make decisions.

Q: Why do you offer 6 hours of entertainment when most DJs only offer 4?
A: Our schedule is fully committed to your event for that day, and we won't charge you for every little thing. We want our packages to easily fulfill the typical event without surprising our customers with a bunch of additional charges. Our goal is to provide superior service and value.

Q: What are your facility requirements?
A: Our contract lists the specific requirements, but essentially we require the following:
We need to have easy roll-in access and be able to load/unload equipment for at least 90 minutes before and after your event.
During setup time we need to be able to play brief calibration tones (usually a few minutes of calibration noise and test-music).
We need a 120vac circuit for sound that is dedicated for our use, and can deliver a minimum of 15 amps to our equipment. To achieve maximum power (large events) we would need approximately 120vac at 60 amps. These power requirements are for sound equipment only, and does not include lighting.
We appreciate access to plenty of ice water during the event.
A facilities manager or associate must be available at all times in case of power failure or other facilities related issues.

Q: What is the expectation for tipping the DJ?
A: Tips are always appreciated, but never expected. We never add unexpected charges like 'gratuity fees' to our invoices.

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: We accept cash, checks and credit cards. Payment in full is due 14 days prior to your event.
